FOR ACTING - Move to a major city. Eventually, New York or Los Angeles will be your destination, but as you build your resum茅 of experience you can work in other major metropolitan areas that have good theater or film communities.

Enroll in acting class. Good actors study their entire lives. To choose a good class, ask trusted, successful professionals for references.

Get a headshot.

Compose a resum茅 of all the work you have done so far. As your body of work grows, drop the less professional work (such as school plays) from your resum茅.

Send your headshot and resum茅 with a brief cover letter to all the casting directors and agents in your area. Follow up with postcards every four to six months, updating them on your current acting projects.

Read the trade papers regularly: ';Backstage,'; ';Dramalogue,'; ';The Ross Reports'; and ';Variety,'; as well as online publications such as newenglandfilm.com, as appropriate. Know what is being cast where, and send headshots and notes directly to directors and producers whenever possible, requesting auditions.

Always accept invitations to industry events and parties, and meet industry professionals whenever possible. Who you know is extremely important.

FOR MODELING - You'll need a modeling portfolio, I'm sure you'll all know what one of those is but for those that don't it's basically a selection of pictures showing yourself in different outfits and poses. The standard size for the photos is 9 by 12 inches and you'll need around 10 - 12 photos. Make sure you focus on quality rather than quantity, remember, you're only as good as your worst photo. Make sure your portfolio has a selection of both head shots and full body shots. Make sure you get a variety of different looks such as swimwear, catalogue and lingerie, you get the idea, also get a couple of black and white shots in there. Avoid using pictures of the same shot.

It can be very advantageous to have photographs from different photographers in a portfolio. This will show the versatility in terms of styles and it will prove that a model can work with a variety of different people. Obviously, the cost of hiring different photographers for a portfolio is prohibitive, but there are many excellent photographers out there who will do prints for time - and of course many more bad ones. If you research what's on offer well, it can be an excellent alternative.

Before going ahead with a photo session ask to look at the photographers portfolio to see if you like his style of photography. No doubt if you go to the photographers studio to book the appointment he will have examples of his work on display anyway. If you've never done modelling before this will also be an excellent practice run for you. Avoid photographers wanting to take nude shots, if possible take a friend with you to the shoot.I am trying to be an actor. any help/advice?
What Jess said.

I would rather try my luck in LA than in NY, since there is more work in that field in Los Angeles.

The thing is, you will probably need to do some other type of work other than acting. Don't shy away from that since you'll need all types of experiences to become a GOOD serious actor.

Learn to do some accents (you get a big chance of listening to a lot of different accents in LA) and just study how regular humans behave. Since we are all actors at heart. We always wear a mask and we lie all the time. So learn from the pros. Go to City Hall ;)

Good luck!
