wow! what a project for 5 year olds!!! and for you!!!!
i'm kind of stumped... *thinking*
it's kind of the opposite concept of coloring inside the lines. it's lines going through the color. monochromatic colors in the background, warm colors in the front. a few circles, round edges, mixed with vertical and straight lines.
ok ok, it's coming to me...
the project:
have the kids draw straight black lines (show them how to use a ruler/straightedge to get straight lines) on a piece of construction paper. maybe pick a number of how many lines to draw (5-10).
then have them pick a number or a letter to trace (pre-cut large cardboard numbers of varying sizes). the kids trace 2 or 3 of the cardboard numbers on their paper.
coloring the number: show them how to color inside the lines they've made with different colors (just use warm colors to simplify). use a yellow in this line, and a red in this line. etc.
then have them color the background the same way with grays and blacks OR with cool colors.
if you don't have time for this size of project, draw/type numbers (varying sizes, like the painting) on a piece of paper. have the students draw lines on the paper over the number. they color or paint the number. then you/they cut the numbers out. finally, post all of the class' numbers on a large posterboard, colored/painted like the background of the painting.
feel free to modify. i hope that gives you some ideas!! :)
