NOTE: If you need advice, and you probably do need advice if you haven't spent any time studying how to invest and don't understand the stock market very well, then you need to work through a stockbroker who can guide your choices. Be very careful about who you choose to give you advice and what you choose to purchase. Some stocks can look good, and some people will tell you that they are a great investment (specialists in doing this sort of thing are called ';boiler rooms';)- but all they want is the commission on your money and what you buy may be worthless junk.
Make a habit of reading the financial pages of newspapers like the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Times. Get a feel for the language people use when they talk stocks and shares and don't believe everything you read or are told.
There are some good books out there - read a few before you spend a dime.
