Hey =] I'm going on holiday for a week, in about a month, and I've arranged for my dog (1 and a half yrs old) to spend this time at my friends', as they have kindly offered and I really believe she will enjoy it more than at a kennel, as they are a loving family.
Anyone's pet been through this? What can I/my friend expect? I'm taking all her things will her, and she will be physically ok, when I take her. Anything else I should remember or take? What can I expect when I come back?
Thanks :]] xxxI'm going on holiday and my dog is spending the week at a friends'. Any help or advice about what to expect?
Give your dog an old shirt of yours to smell while you're gone. Wear a ratty old t-shirt all day and then let her have it in her kennel or put it on one of her stuffed toys or something. Your scent should help calm her down if she's feeling anxious.
In the meantime, make sure you take her to visit your friends house while you are there. It will help you dog if she's not left in a totally strange place without you.
When you do drop her off, don't do any goodbyes. She'll pick up on whatever you're feeling and get uneasy. Instead, just talk to your friend, bring in the stuff, and keep eye contact and interactions with your dog to a minimum.
Your friend can expect a nervous dog for a few days. She'll probably be hyper-sensitive to sound and try to look out windows or spazz out if she hears anyone at the door for awhile. (she'll be waiting for you to come and get her, obviously). Another thing I've noticed is that some dogs will go off of their food, so your friend should be willing to add in some extra yummy stuff if this is the case, to entice your dog to eat. A little bit of lean ground hamburger does wonders.
Make sure your friend is ready to give your dog lots of exercise. Long walks and lots of play will help curb your dog's anxiety over not having you around. Plus your dog will be less likely to get into trouble in their house.
Another thing I've noticed is accidents. Weather it's a dogs nerves or a male marking his new territory, almost every dog I've cared for has had an accident no matter how well housebroken their owner has claimed them to be. Make sure your friend can take your dog out every few hours or at least be able to keep it gated in an appropriate area where that won't be a problem if they have to be out for an extended period of time.
Be prepared to come back to one happy pooch when you return! Your dog will want to spend lots of time with you, so plan a day when you return to take her out to a dog park or something. Or even hang out at home with her before heading back to work again.I'm going on holiday and my dog is spending the week at a friends'. Any help or advice about what to expect?
Make sure your dog has tags on, so people know that the dog is staying with her. If the dog gets out, no one has any way of getting ahold of you. Give them your vet's number and info. Caution them that the dog should be on a leash at all times when outside. Never let it be unattended ever.
Unfortunately sometimes dogs tend to bolt in a new situation. Better safe than sorry!
Bring back a nice gift from your trip. It costs me about $20 US a day to board a dog, they are doing a great thing for you. Plus you don't get things like Kennel Cough.
Well if your dog likes your friend more than you, she might growl. but while your on holiday, buy something that you know your dog might like. For example if she likes squeaky toys you could a buy her a really extraordinary one for her so you could gain back your relationship.
Overall I think she'll be happy to be back with you.
Before you go on holiday make sure you are round at your friends with your dog quite a few tiomes even leave one r two of his toys . She will be fine aslong as you take all that she needs, his own bowl, blanket/bed, toys, food. You are only away for a week so she shouldnt get too stressed.
If your friend gives her plenty of wwalks and feeds her properly I think she will be just dandy.
Glad to see you are not put her into kennels, she wouldn't get the attention or exercise a dog needs when their owners are away.
Enjoy your holiday and she will enjoy hers =D
When we went on a holiday at the beginning of this year, all of our pets somehow knew we were leaving them! They started barking/meowing alot and very loudly. They were really jumpy and frightened.
I'm not too sure what went on while we were gone - our friend said they did fine though.
When we got back, they were just like normal, like we hadn't been anywhere.
Just try not to worry, it'll all be ok. I hope you have a lovely holiday! xx
