Buddhism advice, help! newcomer to the philosophy, need enlightenment.?

okay, SO. i have a book about buddhism that i haven.t quite cracked into yet, but i just want to know what are some of the constraints of being buddhist? it sounds like something amazing to live by, like the four noble truths %26amp;%26amp; karma %26amp;%26amp; it all just makes so much sense.

i just want to know if there are any things i shouldn.t be doing if buddhist.

i heard that killing anything is a no-no. any more? like... cussing, drinking, etc.

thanks :]Buddhism advice, help! newcomer to the philosophy, need enlightenment.?
many buddhists adhere to the ';5 precepts'; which are:

no killing

no stealing

no sexual misconduct (outside of marriage or its equivalent- but like christianity this definition differs from organization to organization)

no consumption of intoxicants

no lying

you can follow one, or as many as you choose to. in the Chinese Mahayana tradition many organizations have a specific ceremony where you can ';皈依'; or ';take refuge'; and become an ';official'; practitioner with a teacher. The 5 precept ceremony is often conducted afterwards for those who chose to partake. It's not obligatory, just recommended.Buddhism advice, help! newcomer to the philosophy, need enlightenment.?
Like most spiritual traditions, Buddhism has lists of approved/disapproved behaviors (see the link below).

But the real point of Buddhism is not blind faith in the teaching of others (including the teaching of the Buddha).

Instead, Buddhism encourages us to pay close attention to our own lives.

When we study ourselves in this careful way, we discover that many of the things that we think make us happy (getting high, buying a new iPod, gossiping about someone) actually don't produce any lasting happiness at all.

And, many of our behaviors, while they might produce a short-term good feeling, have the final result of creating more suffering (for ourselves and/or for others).

And, of course, we all make mistakes. Mistakes are wonderful because they create the opportunity to learn more about ourselves - if we choose to look.

So I hope you'll continue down the path of Buddhism - crack that book and begin to meditate - so you can discover more about your wonderful life! Best wishes on your path.
The basic point of Buddhism is to be released from suffering, and to not cause suffering. Take some time to think of any actions you might take that causes suffering in any way and do your best to cut those things out of your life. As desiring things we can't have also causes suffering, prioritizing our wants is important too. It's not worth getting upset because we can't have something trivial. Just don't even bother wanting it.
Im glad another person in the world is turning to Buddhism now.

I like Buddhism because i dont need to follow ';commandments'; but i can follow ';guide lines'; and if i want to lead a good like ill follow them.

To be honest. I like the way that Buddha did things, he was not a hater, and he was a peaceful prince. He did not call himself God. Buddha is not a God. Buddhist refer to him as God.

Anything to harm nature is a no no. So some Buddhist dont eat meat, because they refer to that as harming natuure, but dont worry. I believe in BUddhism and i still eat meat.
WHY U WANT TO SPOIL UR PHILOSOPHY BY ATTACHING TO THE RELIGIONS.

A KID KNOWS WELL THAT NO RELIIGION TEACH'S BAD IN THE FACE OF THE EARTH.

EVERY RELIGIONS SAYS STEALING, DRUGS, ADULTRY, KILLING NOT ONLY HUMAN EVEN TO BIRDS %26amp; ANIMALS. ALL RELIGIONS SAYS THIS IS BAD AND THE EVIL FOOT STEP.

CAN U TELL ME ANY ONE RELIGION SAYS THIS ALL THINGS ABOVE WHICH I MENTION DOING IS GOOD.

OKAY NOW TELL ME WHAT IF ANYBODY DO THIS CRIMES.

EVERY RELGION SAYS DONT DO THIS THAT ETC.

BUT WHICH RELIGION MENTION THE PUNISHMENT IN THEIR HOLY SCRIPTURE.

FOR ADULTRY THERE IS PUNISHMENT

FOR KILLING THERE IS PUNISHMENT

FOR THEFT THERE IS PUNISHMENT

FOR ALL CRIMES THERE IS PUNISHMENT TO BE GIVEN FOR SUCH CRIMINALS.

IF U DONT KNOW THAN I WILL TELL U THAT RELGION IS ISLAM.

ONLY ISLAMS MENTION THE PUNISHMENT FOR THE CRIMINALS TO BE GIVEN.
Its pretty easy.

No killing, stealing, sexual cruelty, no harsh speech, no alcohol or drugs.

Best wishes on your path.

If you are interested in pursuing buddhism further I recommend a qualified teacher to guide you.

Drinking and doing drugs are huge no-nos, drugs especially. You don't have to be a teetotaler on the alcohol: A glass of wine at parties or a beer or two at a cookout is OK. Alcoholism, however, is not.
Depends whether you want to follow what the Buddha taught or one of the religions called 'Buddhism'. there are big differences between the two.
I think there are constraints on how much black eye liner you can use.
If Buddha practised what he preached, how come he was so obese?
